Hering was a self-taught artist who garnered a lot of respect for his distinctive style, landing shows at prestigious venues such as Milch Gallery and Rehn Gallery in New York. He also frequently exhibited at the most important museums and art association shows including The Art Institute in Chicago, The National Academy of Design in New York, The Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts in Philadelphia, The Carnegie Institute in Pittsburgh, and the Corcoran Galllery in Washington, DC.
This works represents on of his favorite subjects, scenes of the docks in Provincetown, Massachusetts. He also painted scenes from California and the southwestern United States as well as the occasional still life.
