Our Lady of Sorrows

The Lady of Sorrows represents the Catholic image of Mary as sufferer of Seven Great Sorrows in her life as the Virgin Mother of God.  Marian Art was popular throuhout the Middle Ages and into the Modern Christian Era.  Even today She is revered by Catholics around the world as one who can intervene for them with The Holy Father.  The background of this work suggests it  may represent Mary during the Flight into Egypt with Joseph and the infant Christ to escape Herod's Massacre of the Innocents.
